“Roach” Rundown
On Sept. 23, the SFUAD Student Life Facebook page blew up over health and sanitation concerns involving the cafeteria’s Shepard’s Pie and an alleged winged-insect. The bug in question was posthumously photographed in a student’s meal. The picture was then posted to Facebook by a friend of the student in whose meal the bug had been found.
General Manager of Bon Appetit at SFUAD, Melody Lambelet, and Executive Chef Paul Gentile spoke with Jackalope about the concerns raised by students after this incident. The two said that the bug likely flew into the food after the food was cooked. “That’s why I prefer if they do find something, they bring it to us,” added Lambelet, “That way we can try and figure it out.”
The two both defended the cafeteria’s cleanliness, but discussed other possible causes for the problem.
“It could have come from the produce company in the produce box,” Lambelet said. She was also adamant about the possibility of the bug having come from the back door of the cafeteria when students enter/exit. “The health department says that we’re one of the cleanest places they go to so I don’t know what else students want to know.”
In addition to mentioning the State of New Mexico’s legally mandated visits, Lambelet and Gentile discussed the extermination visits regarding the ant problem that has ravaged much of the St. Mike’s dormitories and other living halls. “We have a bug guy come over other week or so,” said Gentile.
During their interview with Jackalope, Lambelet and Gentile both emphasized that they want to be made aware of any problems students face with food service on campus. In addition to using the feedback cards, both say students should contact either of them with any concerns—particularly those related to public health and safety.
Melody and Paul have been great friends of CSF and now SFUAD for over a decade. I was so happy to see them back on campus with Bon Apetit a couple of years ago.
